Overview

This module recognizes the critical role of psychological well-being and professional guidance in empowering adults with Down syndrome to achieve their employment aspirations. It equips educators with effective counseling and mentoring techniques to support learners in overcoming psychological challenges, building confidence and developing the essential skills needed to thrive in the workplace. By addressing the unique psychological needs of this population, this module fosters a holistic approach to employment readiness that goes beyond mere skill acquisition.

Aim

  • To provide educators with a comprehensive understanding of the psychological challenges commonly faced by adults with Down syndrome.
  • To equip educators with effective communication strategies to facilitate understanding and foster positive relationships with learners.
  • To guide educators in planning and conducting both individual and group counseling sessions that cater to the specific needs of adults with Down syndrome.
  • To outline the roles and responsibilities of mentors and provide strategies for effective mentor-mentee matching.
  • To offer practical exercises and activities for enhancing communication, self-presentation and confidence-building skills in learners.
  • To provide educators with tools and resources for implementing successful mentoring programs.

Expected Outcomes

  • Educators will gain a deeper understanding of the psychological needs of adults with Down syndrome and the impact of these needs on their employment readiness.
  • Educators will develop effective communication strategies to foster trust, rapport and open communication with learners.
  • Educators will be able to plan and conduct both individual and group counseling sessions that address the unique challenges and strengths of learners.
  • Educators will understand the roles and responsibilities of mentors and be able to facilitate effective mentor-mentee matches.
  • Educators will be equipped with practical exercises and activities to enhance learners’ communication, self-presentation and confidence-building skills.
